Canada Work Visa Requirements
Work permits, Express Entry, and employer-specific options. Understand how to work in Canada as a skilled worker or temporary employee.
Overview
Canada offers work permits (employer-specific and open), as well as permanent residence pathways such as Express Entry for skilled workers. Temporary work usually requires a job offer and often a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from the employer, unless an exemption applies. Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP) can also lead to work and residence.
Eligibility
- Job offer: From a Canadian employer; LMIA may be required unless exempt.
- Skills: Experience and/or education that meet the job requirements.
- Express Entry: For PR: meet criteria for Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience, or Federal Skilled Trades.
- Language: Language test (English/French) often required for work or PR streams.
- Health & character: Admissibility; medical and police certificates may be required.
Required Documents
- Valid passport.
- Job offer letter and copy of LMIA (if applicable).
- Proof of qualifications (degrees, certificates, experience letters).
- Language test results (e.g. IELTS/CELPIP for English) if required.
- Proof of identity and civil status documents.
- Medical exam and police certificate if requested by IRCC.
Application Process
- Obtain a job offer; employer may need to get a positive LMIA from ESDC.
- Apply online (or as directed) for a work permit via IRCC; submit forms and supporting documents.
- Pay fees and provide biometrics if required.
- IRCC processes the application; you may be asked for additional documents or an interview.
- If approved, you will receive a port of entry letter or work permit.
- Enter Canada with your permit and start work as per the conditions.

Important Tips

- For Express Entry, maximise your CRS score (language, education, experience, age).
- Keep all reference letters and pay stubs; they are useful for future applications or PR.
- Apply well before your intended start date; processing can take several weeks or months.
